Three Steps to Training Progression

When we are working out training goals we often try many different approaches.  Often we can get caught up in all the attention given on methods, standards, status and loose our own perspective of what is reasonable in our lives and what we expect from our dog. One area I like to focus on is the progression of a training exercise and help promote a balance of what works for both the dog and myself. I think it is fair to believe most of us do this to some extent; whether conscious or not. Laying out a process for this has been a fun evolution for us and it helps articulate the importance of making conscious consistencies or adjustments while maintaining a balance of lifestyle for you and your dog. Our way of tracking our progress requires us to Communicate, Integrate and Evaluate.

Communicate – When we are communicating what we want from our dog, it is best to keep a clear vision of what we want. Once you know what it is and how your dog will best receive your message, you are ready to move forward with letting your dog develop their skill.

Integrate – Once you have a solid ability to utilize your new command with your dog, you can now implement the task into your daily life and routine. Through this part of the process you will find possible adjustments and nuances  where you may need to develop areas.

Evaluate – Once we get into the development of our dogs progress, we can become interested in achieving levels of accreditation or utilization of the task. Once momentum and rapport have been established, we can move onto the next step if we desire with benevolent ease. If we know that the new task is useful, we can use the leverage of the development in our life with the dog to instill trust to learn new process.

Training is a process. Each step an event.
