Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many dogs do you hike with?

A: On any given day, the number of dogs can be different. We range between 8 and 14 per group. Most of the dogs are well seasoned to the routines.

Q: How long are the hikes?

A: Our hikes last about 1.5 hours. It takes at least one hour of off leash with other dogs to effect a dog state of being; From energy level to social interaction.

Q: How big does my dog need to be to come to U-Dog?

A: Any dog can come to U-Dog. Small or large does not effect the experience. We tend to keep smaller dogs closer to the handlers during transport and hiking. Regardless of size, dogs all think alike and have the same needs.

Q: Are they all off leash?

A: Yes. New dogs are left on a longline until they communicate well and understand the rules. It is important to tell us everything you can about your dog when beginning our programs.

Q: Have you ever lost a dog?

A: No. From time to time, we will get a dog run off due to contributing factors. The frequency at which this happens is around 0.2%. We cannot stress more that we need to know as much about your dog as possible. Dogs are pack animals. Any healthy dog would want to stay with the pack.

Q: Don't the dogs fight?

A: How we see dogs interact is not considered acceptable by most people. Dogs are predators and communicate in appropriate ways for their species. A healthy social dog can put on quite a show during engagement with another dog with little or no injury or damage. Often after a tussle, play ensues. It's actually a healthy process and completely normal. The incidence of abnormal or truly aggressive behaviour is very low. We tend to move on quickly and focus on play and camaraderie.

Q: What sort of methods do you use for training.

A: As a trainer and business owner, this is one of the more touchy questions to deal with. The training world is geared toward selling programs and making it fun and positive. It's a great way to get people involved. At U-Dog, we take a direct approach to training. Dogs age 7 years for every 1 human year. Our approach is to base a good foundation to communicate with your dog to make best of the time you will share together. Positive is the outcome of good, clear communication.
